This compilation covers 1 to 15 August 2026. The month has been unusually heavy on banking: a ₹18,268 crore foreign investment into an Indian lender, a draft framework on how loans may be priced, and a shared technology platform put into the hands of the country's urban cooperative banks.
This page covers the first half of August only, and will be extended as the month goes on.
Economy
Bank of America takes up to 49.9% of Jio Credit
Announced on 12 August 2026, Bank of America Corporation is investing up to ₹18,268.22 crore — about USD 1.9 billion — in Jio Credit Limited, the lending arm of Jio Financial Services. It takes an initial 26.5% stake worth ₹6,612.9 crore, rising to 49.90% only on exercising warrants worth ₹11,655.3 crore, convertible within 18 months. Shares and warrants are issued on a preferential basis, subject to regulatory approval.
Jio Credit held assets under management of ₹30,667 crore at 30 June 2026, and the two sides will have equal board representation. Note why the figure stops at 49.9%: staying below 50% keeps the company from becoming a subsidiary.
RBI drafts on loan pricing and leverage
The Reserve Bank proposed requiring banks and NBFCs to standardise loan pricing through a board-approved policy stating the internal benchmark used and the components of the spread. It separately proposed aligning India's leverage ratio with the Basel III Leverage Ratio 2017 Standard — a non-risk-weighted backstop against balance-sheet expansion — with comments invited to 28 August 2026, and floated moving most NBFC credit facilities to a term-loan structure.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched Bank in a Box and a Security Operations Centre for urban cooperative banks at the Sahkar Nav-Kranti programme in Mumbai, inaugurating the new premises of the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC). The platform bundles core banking, digital payments, cloud infrastructure and regulatory compliance for small and single-branch UCBs.
