About This Recruitment

Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission has notified recruitment for 821 posts under Advt. No. 740, Notification No. 07/2026 dated 11 August 2026. Applications are accepted online from 11 Aug 2026 to 09 Sept 2026. The prescribed qualification is A degree from a UGC-recognised university, with knowledge of Tamil, and the age limit is 18 to 32 years before category relaxation is applied. The vacancies are spread across 2 distinct posts, and the category-wise split for each is set out in the vacancy table below.
Selection is made through Preliminary examination, Main examination and Onscreen certificate verification, followed by the remaining stages set out below. Selected candidates are placed in the pay scale of Levels 9 to 18 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix, depending on the post. The place of posting is Departments across Tamil Nadu. The examination is currently scheduled for 01 Nov 2026, which leaves a defined window to work back from when planning preparation.
The application fee is ₹150, valid five years for One Time Registration — all candidates, and no fee is payable by SC, ST, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities and destitute widows. The entire process is completed online, from registration through to fee payment and the final printout of the confirmation page. A correction window is available after applications close, and it is the only opportunity to amend most fields — details are in the dates table below.
Read the official notification in full before you begin the form. Eligibility, fees and dates are revised through corrigenda more often than candidates expect, and an application submitted against the wrong criteria is rejected at document verification rather than at submission — by which point the cycle is over.

Vacancy Details
Vacancy counts are provisional and are revised through corrigenda. The category-wise split determines the cut-off you will actually be measured against.
| Post Name | Total |
|---|---|
| Group IIA Services — Assistant, Clerk, Accountant, Executive Officer and related posts | 780 |
| Group II Services — Assistant Inspector, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Probation Officer, Sub Registrar Grade II, Jailor, Assistant Section Officer and related posts | 41 |
| Total | 821 |
Educational Qualification
The qualification must be held on or before the cut-off date stated in the notification. Final-year candidates should check whether provisional applications are permitted for this recruitment.
| Post | Required Qualification |
|---|---|
| Most posts | A degree from any UGC-recognised university, with knowledge of Tamil proved through SSLC, HSC or a degree taken with Tamil, or through the Second Class Language Test (Full Test). |
| Assistant Section Officer (Law) | A B.L. degree. |
| Assistant Section Officer cum Programmer | A Master's in Computer Application, or an M.Sc. in Information Technology. |
- Knowledge of Tamil is compulsory, proved by SSLC, HSC or a degree taken with Tamil, or by passing the Second Class Language Test.
- Neither the preliminary paper nor the Tamil paper counts towards your rank — the 300-mark Paper II decides everything.
- The notification restricts some posts: Audit Inspector is open only to candidates professing the Hindu religion, and Jailor and Warden posts are gender-specific.
- Colour blindness and night blindness disqualify candidates from certain posts.
- Aadhaar linking with the One Time Registration is mandatory, and vacancy numbers are tentative.
Age Limit & Relaxation
Upper age limits are relaxed by category. Read the row that applies to you before you conclude you are ineligible.
| Category | Upper Age Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC, ST, MBC, DC and BC | No upper age limit |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | Up to 50 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Concessions as notified |
Age is reckoned as on 1 July 2026. The maximum of 32 applies to the Others category; there is no upper limit for SC, ST, MBC, DC and BC candidates. Probation Officer starts at 22.
Pay Scale
Figures are the pay scale, not take-home pay. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances are paid over and above the basic pay shown.
| Post | Pay Level | Pay Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Inspector | Level 18 | Tamil Nadu pay matrix |
| Most Assistant posts | Level 10 | Tamil Nadu pay matrix |
| Clerk posts | Level 9 | Tamil Nadu pay matrix |
Selection Process
Each stage is qualifying for the next. Clearing a stage does not carry marks forward unless the notification says so.
- 1Preliminary examination — a single objective paper of 200 marks, screening only
- 2Main examination — separate for each group: a qualifying Tamil paper and a 300-mark General Studies paper
- 3Onscreen certificate verification
- 4Physical certificate verification and counselling
Exam Pattern
Understanding the marking scheme is worth as much as the syllabus — attempt strategy depends on the negative marking below.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary — General Studies, aptitude and language, OMR | — | 200 | 3 hours |
| Main Paper I — Tamil eligibility test, qualifying only | — | 100 | 3 hours |
| Main Paper II — Group II, General Studies, descriptive | — | 300 | 3 hours |
| Main Paper II — Group IIA, General Studies and reasoning, computer-based | — | 300 | 3 hours |
The **preliminary marks are for screening only and do not count towards the final rank**. Paper I is a Tamil eligibility test needing 40 of 100, and it too is excluded from merit — the ranking rests on the 300-mark Paper II.
